Feeding can start as soon as it begins to freeze. Scatter the food on the ground in open areas so that the birds are not at risk of being eaten by cats lurking in the bushes. Another option is to place a bird table or a feeder house/tube hanging from a branch with a rope. Cats can only look at these with great longing. Place the bird table in a sunny and sheltered spot, preferably where you can keep an eye on it from behind your window. Make sure there is a roof over the bird table so that the food doesn't get wet or disappear under a snow shower. Furthermore, it's not advisable to place the bird table close to large trees, garden sheds, pergolas, etc., from which cats can jump down.
